Every Breath You Take

After returning to the café, Declan continued his plant-based dinner with Jess, finding it surprisingly easy in the process, although he’d have much preferred a normal mug of builder’s tea than the mason jar with a straw in. Jess asked more about the case and Declan provided her with as many facts as they had, allowing Jess to consider the options. He knew Liz didn’t want Jess in any investigations, and after Hurley he totally understood that, but he knew Jess still wanted to be a police detective like her father and grandfather, and nothing was going to stop that, so it was better to lean into it.

As it was, Jess didn’t have any new aspects to the case, pointing out that the last studio album that Alternator had brought out was before I was born, dad, so after dinner Declan hugged his daughter goodbye and offered to take her home. Jess pointed out that as she was sixteen, she was fine to catch a tube train and there was an awkward moment when neither left the café, until Anjli said her farewells, dragging Declan out by the arm and, only when they were walking back towards Covent Garden, with Declan calming once he saw that the BMW was now gone, Anjli finally explained to him Jess wasn’t going home yet, was likely to start her second catchup of the evening with Prisha, and the last thing she wanted was her dad there.

As they were going back to the same house, Declan and Anjli car-shared to Hurley, leaving Anjli’s car at Temple Inn and, the following morning car shared back into the station, using the time to discuss the case. In fact, Declan already realised that Anjli was discussing every part of the case except for Eden Storm, but decided not to press her on the subject. In a strange way, he was quite happy for the billionaire to be forgotten.

It was around fifteen minutes to nine when they entered the Command Unit, being buzzed through by the Desk Sergeant and making their way upstairs, nodding to Doctor Marcos as she looked up from her desk in forensics as they passed her office.

Billy was already at his station as they arrived.

‘What’s new?’ Declan asked. Billy pointed his thumb at Monroe’s office.

‘He’s been waiting for you,’ he said. ‘Peter Suffolk was brought in this morning, about half hour back. Monroe wants you to take lead.’

‘I thought Bullman would want this one?’ Anjli commented, but Billy simply shook his head.

‘She’s seen this guy sing with her favourite band every two years when they’ve toured, for around a decade,’ he explained. ‘She doesn’t want to interview him for murder.’

‘It does kill the magic slightly,’ Declan admitted. ‘Anything from the Stryker CCTV people?’

‘Waiting for footage to be sent over now,’ Billy replied. ‘Currently I’m just going through old album credits, trying to work out who was involved in the Secrets and Lies recording and who’s died, but there seem to be discrepancies in the linings of both the album and the CD.
